Current Reading List February- March 2015

With spring break finally here (at least for me) I can finally relax and read what I want. Despite being a Floridian for the last 10 + years or so I am NOT a beach person. The hot sand and pee filled ocean never really appealed to me. But getting back on topic, I haven't had much time for any pleasure reading since starting graduate school. So this spring break I am going to do a little binge reading and catch up on what's out there. Here are the ones I picked out and hope you guys might enjoy them too.

A Memoir 

Out of all the books I picked up this has to be my favorite! Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant by Roz Chast is a memoir about her relationship with her aging parents. Roz explores through family dynamics and the topic we all dread to talk about... the inevitability of DEATH. Roz takes memoirs to a whole new level by using comics to tell her story. The book is filled colorful illustrations as well as personal photos from Roz. A combination of comedy, life lessons and mostly importantly love. No matter how old we get the love for our parents never seems to change. Incredibly honest and moving, you won't want to put it down. 

Grace's Guide: The Art of Pretending to be a Grownup

Grace Helbig has already taken the YouTube world by storm with her hilariously "informative" videos and now she is doing what every other YouTuber out there is doing... write a book. I have read a lot of the books out there written by YouTubers, but this one is definitely the most relatable. Grace covers many important topics on becoming an adult from how do date, "grown up" food, to even how to make adult friends.  But of course she adds her own hilarious spin that helps the everyday girl or guy conquer the "adult" world. Highly recommend if you are looking for a light and funny read. 

The DUFF

I recently just saw the movie in theaters and fell in love! I didn't realize till after I saw the movie that is it based of a book. But hey what movie isn't these days. The DUFF is a coming of age story that deals with the downs of high school more specifically being a DUFF or otherwise known as designated ugly fat friend. If you seen the trailer for the movie already you will have a sense on what the book is about. If Mean Girls and A Cinderella Story had a baby this would be it. GO and see the movie first! 

Fresh Off The Boat

A Memoir

I started watching the TV show based off of this book and thought why not go and read it. What drew me into this book/ TV show was that it reminded me a little of my life. I know exactly and can relate to what Eddie was going through growing up in Florida after coming from a different country in the 90s. I cried so much from laughing that my family and friends thought I was going crazy. 

Current Reading List- December 2015

I have not posted one of these for a long time. Between work and graduate school applications I have had no time to read for pleasure. I was meeting with a client the other day and we were next to a Barnes & Noble so I decided to pop in really quick to get some new reading material. I have a vacation coming up so I thought I can squeeze in some reading (I have actually started reading a little  already as I am typing this post.) I have started buying more books on my Kindle because they are usually cheaper and take very little space and also Audible so I can listen to books while I work, but there is nothing like holding an actual book (Yes I am a book nerd and proud of it!)

So here is what I chose :D

Queen of The Damned

By: Anne Rice

I have been a fan of Anne Rice for a long time and I do know that there is a stigma to some of her writing especially when it comes to homosexuality. But for me I think she is an amazing writer and I am one of those people who could really care less of what others think especially when it comes to MY reading choices. What brought upon me to get this was after watching the Aaliyah movie I went back to listening to some of her old stuff and also stumbled upon some of her old movies. One of those old movies happened to be Queen of the Damned which is based on Anne Rice's novel. The movie itself wasn't particularly great compared to other Anne Rice's novel adaptations like Interview with a Vampire which was amazeballs but compared to Twilight this one was a hoot. After watching the movie I saw a lot of comments saying that the book was much better. And that is how I ended up choosing this novel. Queen of the Damned is part of Anne Rice's famous Vampire Chronicles series which details the lives of various vampires. I have read a couple of them not all and this one being not read. But to keep this short Queen of the Damned is about Akasha who is the mother of all vampires. She has risen from a 6,000 year slumber and wants to take over the world and such. I can't go into too much detail and not because I haven't read all of it but because there are connections with her other books hence these books being chronicles. But so far it has been pretty decent. I am not one of those crazy vampire lovers, but I do have a love for the supernatural and once in awhile I do read some stuff like this, and whether or not you are interested in vampires or other supernatural creatures you should check out Anne Rice's books. She is brilliant.

When We Met

By: A.L. Jackson, Molly McAdams & Christina Lee

I have always been a sucker for a cheesy romance novel especially when it comes to the author Molly McAdams. Her love stories are more realistic and relatable to the average woman or man. When we met tells the story of 4 girls and their problems they are currently going through. Each girl's story is written by a different author (basically an anthology). I love books like this. It introduces me not only to different styles of writing but also new authors to explore.

Never Have I Ever: My Life (So Far) Without A Date
by Katie Heaney

I been really stressed the last couple of weeks so like most people I needed a good laugh. 

Never Have I Ever is Katie Heaney's memoir and her experience or lack of experience in the dating world. She is pretty much the white version of Mindy Kaling. She is super hilarious and witty yet totally relatable to the everyday girl. I highly recommend this book for anyone out there that needs a good laugh!

Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

At first glance I admit it looks like some little kid's book. But trust me people of all ages will love this coming of age story focusing on the relationship of 2 sisters (Based on the author's own life). I was intrigued by this book because much of the story is a parallel to my own life and relationship with my younger sister. The book is written in comic form so it is pretty entertaining to read.

WHAT AM I READING?!?!

The Maze Runner By James Dashner

When I was younger I was always the person to read the books BEFORE they became movies. As I get older and life becomes more and more complicated I now read the books AFTER they are made into a movie. Regardless I have been itching to read The Maze Runner for quite sometime but just never bothered to pick it up until now. The Maze Runner by James Dashner is the first book of the series. It tells the tale of a boy named Thomas who is thrown into this crazy ever changing maze along with other boys who like him have no memory of how they got there in the first place.  I don't want to give away anything and also I haven't finished it yet but it basically goes on telling how Thomas and the other boys endure the maze. It is very Hunger Games-esq. So far its been a pretty good read compelling, gripping and easy to follow. I definitely recommend this book to everyone ALL AGES. The movie will be released September 19, 2014 starring Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf) as the main character.

Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs By Chuck Klosterman

This is one of those books that you read when you are just kinda down and done with life. Chuck Klosterman talks well more like attacks postmodern America such as reality TV, porn, literary Jesus freaks and so forth. It is hilarious and super entertaining. However I don't recommend this book to close minded people or too those who may be a little bit conservative. Klosterman is pretty forthcoming and blunt with his ideals and hey it is a free country so to speak.

Current Reading List: December 2013

Here are some books I been enjoying the month of December :D 
I never just read one book at a time. Ever since I could read I always read many books at one time otherwise I get bored too easily. Also I read fast so for me it makes sense to just have more than one book lying around. 

1.) Mortal Instruments (First 3 books in the series): City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass By Cassandra Clare- Angels vs. Demons, Good vs. Evil pretty much sums it up. If you are a fan of the Hunger Games Series and Harry Potter you will enjoy this. 

2.) Cross My Heart (Alex Cross Series) By James Patterson- Basically Law and Order in a book/story form. The series follows cop turned FBI agent Alex Cross and the unique criminals he deals with. Action, crime, violence, romance, friendship, family pretty much has it all.

3.) You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation By Deborah Tannen- Insight on gender differences and why women and men think the way they do. Super entertaining and great advice. 

4.) Freakonomics By Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner- This book came out awhile back and had great reviews. I don't know why it took me this long to start reading this. Written by an economist and journalist this book explains riddles of everyday life from crime to cheating to even sports. Really entertaining and mind boggling.
